The story
Another plate from Les Roses, Redouté's three-volume, 170-plate survey that remains the standard against which every later rose illustration is measured. Rosa gallica — the old French rose, ancestor to most modern garden roses through centuries of cultivated crossing — appears here in full spray, its densely layered petals and toothed foliage rendered with the same patient, plate-by-plate stipple-engraving process Redouté used throughout his career. What to notice: Redouté worked at the exact historical moment horticulturists were beginning to systematically hybridize roses into the thousands of modern cultivars that followed — Les Roses is as much a record of that turning point as it is a portrait book, cataloguing a genus on the edge of being remade by human hands.
