The story
Ernst Haeckel was a zoologist first, but Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature, 1899–1904) ranged wherever he found pattern worth proving — including, on this plate, orchids. Haeckel and lithographer Adolf Giltsch worked from his own field studies and museum specimens to render each bloom with the same obsessive symmetry-hunting eye Haeckel brought to jellyfish and radiolarians: the orchid's already strange floral architecture, exaggerated just slightly toward the geometric ideal Haeckel believed underlay all living form. What to notice: Kunstformen der Natur wasn't just illustration — it was an argument, part of Haeckel's lifelong case that beauty in nature was evidence of underlying evolutionary law, an idea that went on to shape Art Nouveau design as much as biology.
